Abstract
Plus de 21 milliards de dollars américains sont dépensés chaque année pour la conservation de la biodiversité. Malgré leur importance pour prévenir ou ralentir les extinctions et préserver la biodiversité, les interventions de conservation font rarement l'objet d'une évaluation systématique de leur impact global. Les îles abritent une quantité disproportionnée de biodiversité par rapport aux terres continentales, dont une grande partie est fortement menacée d'extinction. En effet, les espèces insulaires représentent près de deux tiers des extinctions récentes. Les îles sont donc des cibles essentielles pour la conservation. Nous avons utilisé une analyse approfondie de la littérature et des bases de données, associée à des entretiens avec des experts, pour estimer les bénéfices globaux d'une action de conservation de plus en plus utilisée pour enrayer la perte de biodiversité : l'éradication des mammifères invasifs sur les îles. Nous avons trouvé 236 espèces de faune insulaire terrestre indigène (596 populations) qui ont bénéficié de l'action de conservation (596 populations) qui ont bénéficié de réponses démographiques et/ou distributionnelles positives suite à 251 éradications de mammifères envahissants sur 181 îles. Sept espèces indigènes (huit populations) ont été affectées négativement par l'éradication des mammifères envahissants. Quatre espèces menacées ont vu leur catégorie de risque d'extinction sur la Liste Rouge de l'Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature (UICN) réduite en conséquence directe de l'éradication des mammifères envahissants, et aucune espèce n'est passée à une catégorie de risque d'extinction plus élevée. Nous prévoyons que 107 oiseaux, mammifères et reptiles très menacés figurant sur la Liste rouge de l'UICN6% de toutes ces espèces très menacées ont probablement bénéficié de l'éradication des mammifères envahissants sur les îles. Étant donné que le suivi d'éradication est sporadique et limité, les impacts des éradications des éradications globales sont probablement plus importants que ce que nous rapportons ici. Nos résultats résultats soulignent l'importance de l'éradication des mammifères invasifs sur les îles pour protéger la faune la plus menacée au monde.
