Our results suggest that some vines may alter the spatiotemporal pattern of recruitment sites in a forest ecosystem following a natural disturbance, quickly creating more very shady spots and inhibiting not only the germination of early successional species but also the growth of stems from advanced regeneration. Long-term studies and more experimental work combined with appropriate models may help us understand why vines sometimes have a detrimental effect on forest regeneration.
