Abstract
L'éradication de certains nuisibles introduits en Nouvelle-Zélande, tels que les rats, les rats-taupes et les opossums, semble de plus en plus réalisable grâce aux actions réussies menées à ce jour dans plusieurs villes (par exemple, la ville de Wellington) et à l'objectif national du gouvernement d'éliminer les prédateurs à l'horizon 2050. Nous détaillons ici les avantages potentiels de l'éradication des rats urbains et constatons qu'ils couvrent un large éventail de sujets, notamment une réduction potentielle du risque d'infection par au moins sept maladies zoonotiques (leptospirose, toxoplasmose, trichinellose, typhus murin et trois maladies entériques). Parmi les autres avantages potentiels, on peut citer : les avantages psychologiques liés à l'augmentation de la population d'oiseaux indigènes dans les villes ; la réduction des dommages causés aux réserves alimentaires ; la réduction des dommages causés par les rats à l'isolation, aux murs et aux toits des bâtiments ; et la réduction des incendies dans les bâtiments liés aux dommages causés par les rats. Toutefois, l'incertitude quant à l'ampleur de ces effets est considérable. C'est pourquoi nous présentons un programme de recherche provisoire qui constitue une première étape vers la quantification des principaux avantages probables de l'éradication des rats en matière de santé publique.
